Welcome to our pages for the first time. What took you so long?
The release of the debut album took a lot of time, but in was done in time. Debut album was preceded by two demos. Furthermore, the band didn't work during three years (from 2005 till 2008). But it has been done many from 2008 to the present day. In March we'll completing the work on the second album.
Tell our readers something more about the band and the music you create.
It's hard to talk about music, the music speaks for itself. Therefore, we recommend to the readers just to check our msuic, and then you'll know that we are the Ukrainian Pagan Metal band. Our music is a tribute to our land and traditions.
The important fact that at the moment the Paganland participants are not only musicians, but also like-minded persons, so we have a comfortable place to work. In addition, we have our own rehearsal base, where we can play how we want and when we want.
You find you inspiration in Slavonic mythology. When you compare it with other mythologies, which one is the most similar to Slavonic?
We think that to the Slavic mythology the closest ones are Nordic-Germanic and Celtic mythology. And this is not surprising, because all of these mythologies have the common European roots. It is well known that the Celts and Scandinavians have visited the territory of modern Ukraine. That's why runes still are found from the north of Norway and to the south of Ukraine.
You are aware that Croatia is part of Slavonic people too?
Yes, of course we know that Croatia is a part of the Slavic World. But did you know that the tribes that inhabited the territory of modern Carpathian called White Croats? Here you have quite an obvious kinship.
Have you ever been in Croatia before?
Unfortunately, none of the Paganland members ever visited Croatia. But we are well aware that Croatia is a beautiful country with a rich culture, architecture and nature. We hope to visit you someday: it is better to see once than hear a hundred times.
How is situation in Ukraine now, lots of thing happened in past two decades?!
Much has changed during the last 20 years, but, unfortunately, not everything has changed for the better. The Soviet empire collapsed, and it is very good. It gives a chance to Ukraine to find a place in the new Europe. But here is an unfavorable political situation in Ukraine. The people with questionable and often criminal backgrounds are torn in parliament. That's why Ukraine will hardly become part of the EU in any foreseeable future.
Are you nostalgic for old times?
We don't feel nostalgia for the old days. But there are good memories. For example, how our first demo named 'Gods of Golden Circle' was created in the 1999th. It was a good time.
Ok, tell me something about your new album 'Wind Of Freedom'?
Album 'Wind of Freedom' is like our child, and we treat it with love and awe. We were working on it for two years. All instrumental parts were recorded in December 2010, and all music material was mixed in January-February 2011. We were satisfied on result, although in time errors and flaws become clear. Musicians are rarely satisfied with their work at 100%.
Why 'Wind Of Freedom'? Is it political theme or you are focused just on paganism?
Our music is addressed primarily to thinking people, for which Ukraine - not an empty phrase. We raise the topic of paganism and try to avoid political themes. Although I can say with confidence, that we are the patriots of our native land - do someone like or it now we don't care.
Introduce me the album and your expectations from it?
We would like to bring the album to the maximum number of people to enable them to listen it. Listen and rate it. It is always nice to see when your work is appreciated.
What is it out there in the Carpathian mountains that occupied people mind and soul?
Really, there is its own, unique atmosphere in the Carpathian Mountains. People who have been here, are unlikely to remain indifferent. Still there are people, called molfars, who transmit their secret knowledge from generation to generation. Carpathian Mountains is a great source of inspiration, so Carpathian melodies inherent in music Paganland.
In July 2013 we participate in the Carpathian Alliance Metal Festival. So we invite everyone to the Carpathians and to this Festival.
How would you define your homeland threw metal music?
In Ukraine the political and economic situation is so negative that it can be said: do not be so bad - it would be funny. And this is something like a cabaret-porno-grind. But in spite of all in Ukraine the people are living, they work, hope and love. In addition, Ukraine is wonderful country. This Dnieper, the Carpathians, the Crimea and the Black Sea. And in metal music it reminds symphonic power-black.
So the result is a cabaret-porno-grind mixed with symphonic power-black - that's a a good description of Ukraine in terms of metal music :)
Are you competitive towards other bands and do you cooperate with them?
What's a point in the competition with other groups? In my opinion, this is stupid. After all, you still need to get up on stage and there prove that you do something you are. Unfortunately, there are many groups that "proclaim" a lot, but are worth little in reality. Generally music is very hard work, and success comes only to hard working and talented.
Your opinion about Russian band Arkona?
Arkona - good band, real professionals. We played with them on the same stage at CAMF 2012, have seen their live show and we can say that the Arkona works fine, they are great. But maybe someone does not like their work.
Is there any band you would like to play with, to go on tour together?
First we need to work hard to get into a company worthy bands. No need to list all those with whom Paganland would like to play on one stage. But still, dreams come true - I know it for sure.
Thank you very much for your time!
Thank you very much for your interest in Paganland. We wish you all the best!
